Convocation Ceremony Celebrates Start of New School Year
With smiles on their faces and a spring in their step, the class of 2027 walked hand in hand with the prefirst and first grade students to Childs Memorial Terrace for Opening Convocation on Wednesday, September 2 — setting the tone for the 2026–2027 school year.
Head of School Dave Farace ‘87 greeted the student body, faculty, staff, and trustees and began the morning with a series of jokes before turning to why McDonogh is such a special place. Drawing on the School's guiding idea — "Experience what happens when joy meets purpose" — he shared an example of how students in Advanced Economics and Computer Science recently applied their expertise in support of two Greatest Good McDonogh partners. He then challenged the community: "Let's launch into the new year with a passion for serving others and making real contributions on and off campus. Let's embrace the McDonogh culture where questions are encouraged, where exploration is celebrated, and where joy meets purpose."
Farace was followed by Huy Le, President of the Class of 2027, who challenged students in every grade to try something new, and Middle School Representative Riley Grant '31, who encouraged the community to practice kindness. Members of the Class of 2029, Riley W. and Thomas H., welcomed the gathering and wished the seniors well.
Convocation ended with Jon Aaron '72 ringing a school bell — a gift to McDonogh from a sister school in Odesa, Ukraine, in the 1980s — officially launching the new school year.
