AI and Emerging Technologies

AI Is Not Exempt from Our Mission. It Is Subject to It.

Every decision McDonogh makes about AI is filtered through the same lens as all other educational decisions: Does this serve our mission?

  • Does it help us provide life-altering educational experiences that inspire personal and intellectual growth?
  • Does it bring us closer to our vision of a dynamic, inclusive community built on lifelong relationships, the pursuit of excellence, and a shared commitment to do the greatest possible amount of good?

We start with these questions because we are committed to building meaningful human relationships as we explore emerging technologies.

Our Goal

Prepare every McDonogh student, faculty, and staff member to engage with AI and emerging technologies thoughtfully, equitably, and with a clear sense of purpose. We are thoughtful about not only AI tools that exist today, but also emerging and future technologies we cannot yet name.

Expectations for Use

McDonogh's expectations for our students are grounded in our Character Compass and Honor Code.

Integrity in the Age of AI Means:

  • Being honest about when, how, and how much AI assisted your work.
  • Not representing AI-generated content as the product of your own original thought without disclosure.
  • Seeking clarity from teachers and supervisors when you are unsure whether AI use is appropriate.

Respect in the Age of AI Means:

  • Recognizing that AI systems can perpetuate harm, bias, and inequity, and refusing to use them in ways that do.
  • Honoring the intellectual labor of others whose work may appear in AI training data.

Responsibility in the Age of AI Means:

  • Understanding that you, the user, not the AI, are accountable for what you submit, share, or publish.
  • Caring about how AI decisions affect all people – both in and out of the room.

McDonogh's engagement with and policies on AI and emerging technologies are overseen by our Senior Director of Educational Digital Strategy, Robyn Little, who is supported by an all-school AI Committee composed of volunteer representatives from all three academic divisions and various staff departments.
