Travis Holmes '03 was announced as the new Head Coach of McDonogh’s boys varsity lacrosse program on Wednesday, October 15. Holmes has been the team’s varsity defensive coordinator since 2018 and was instrumental in building a winning culture that produced four MIAA "A" conference championships (2016, 2022, 2023, and 2024).
In making the announcement, Athletic Director Jeff Parsons noted that while the school conducted a nationwide search for a new head lacrosse coach, it became clear that Holmes’ deep roots in the McDonogh community, his dedication to the school’s student-athletes, and his clear vision for the program's success made him the ideal person to lead the next chapter.
“No one understands our ethos better than Coach Holmes,” said Parsons.. “He embodies the spirit of McDonogh and possesses an unwavering commitment to developing our student-athletes.”
As a McDonogh student, Holmes distinguished himself as a three-sport star in football, wrestling, and lacrosse before graduating in 2003. He went on to a successful Division I lacrosse career at the University of Maryland, where he also earned a B.S. in Finance.
"Lacrosse has been a central part of my life since I was young. I love the game, and I am honored to lead this team,” says Holmes.
“To me, it’s more than winning championships; it’s about developing character, teaching resilience, and building relationships that last a lifetime. I am incredibly excited to build upon our program's storied legacy and get to work with our talented student-athletes," he continued.
Since returning to his alma mater in 2010, Holmes has also served as the offensive coordinator for the varsity football team, helping guide them to multiple MIAA “A” championship games (2019, 2021, 2023, and 2024). Additionally, his impact on the wrestling program has been equally meaningful. He has served as the head JV coach, head Middle School coach, and as a varsity assistant since 2009. Off the field, he is the head of the boys dormitory.
