Fifth Grade Learns About the Negro Leagues

For eleven years, the fifth grade curriculum has been tied to research and discussion of the Negro Baseball Leagues. Over the years, McDonogh has welcomed Rayner Banks, a Negro League ambassador and historian, who has helped connect students with representatives of the Negro League players. On Friday, January 19, Mr. Banks, former Negro League players, and their families visited McDonogh spoke to the fifth grade during advisory. The students heard from Judge David Harty from the Bowie Baysox, Charles Day from the Babe Ruth Birthplace Museum, Pastor William Benson, Negro League historian Don Conway, and Mrs. Geraldine Day, the wife of Hall of Famer Leon Day.

The fifth grade also had an opportunity to meet with the players, collect autographs, and tour an exhibit of memorabilia outlining the League’s history.
