Model UN Delegation Travels to Columbia University

McDonogh's 16-member Model UN delegation traveled to Columbia University in New York City from January 11 to 14 for the annual conference simulating the work of the United Nations. During the weekend, McDonogh delegates participated in a variety of committees of topics including Brexit and its Aftermath, Lebanese Independence, the Kurdish Question, the Soviet Politburo, and Taft and George H. W. Bush's Presidential Councils.

"The Columbia Model UN Conference is always one of my favorite weekends of the year," explained Ethan C. '19. "Working in committee is an exhilarating, fast-paced experience which forces you to be on your feet and creative, but also poised and professional. Each year my committees do far more than just educate me on the issues being debated; they teach me new skills that ready me for my life beyond McDonogh."

The delegation also had the wonderful opportunity to visit the US Mission to the United Nations headed by Nikki Haley. There they learned about the decision-making process of the UN and the role of the United States in the both the Security Council and the General Assembly. The McDonogh team also managed to see some of the sights of the city during their visit to New York.

"Our Eagles fought long and hard from morning to night for four long days," team advisor Joanne Cho said. "Five of them were called out of there beds to solve emergency issues in midnight crises until 2 A.M."

Their hard work paid off as four members of the delegation were honored with awards. Shane S. '20, Ethan C. '19, and Kevin K. '18 all earned Honorable Mentions, while Mateo A. '19 won the Outstanding Delegate Prize.

Congratulations to the entire team, including Allison R. '18, Allyson H. '18, Kevin K. '18, Claire M. '18, Jeremy W. '18, Riley C. '18, Ethan C. '19, Alastair C. '19, Hannah S. '19, Jonathan H.
