Senior Wins National Award for Sportsmanship

McDonogh senior Eleonore E. was presented with the 2016 DeRoy Sportsmanship Award at a ceremony during the 2016 U.S. Junior Squash Championships at Harvard University on Saturday, March 12. The national award is given to one female and one male high school senior who displays exemplary behavior on and off court, while competing at a high level of squash.

“I’ve seen some of the best players win and lose, and at the end of the day, what really sticks with me is how they behave on court,” Eleonore said in an article on ussquash.com. “I always try to model that. And I don’t want to have a defeat or a win, but not feel like I earned it without acting properly on court.”

Peter Heffernan, Director of Squash at Meadow Mill Athletic Club commented, “I cannot think of a more deserving winner in the thirty plus years I have been involved with junior squash. The level of sportsmanship Eleonore showed on court the past three seasons, competing with the boys in the MIAA league as well as on the national and international stage, was outstanding.”

In addition to playing on McDonogh’s co-ed varsity squash team, Eleonore represented Team USA in the World Junior Championships and Battle of the Border.
