Athletic Accolades
Congratulations again to the Girls Indoor Track team and the Girls Basketball
team for earning the IAAM A Conference championship titles. Following are
additional athletic achievements earned in February:
Baltimore Sun Girl Athlete of the Week (February 17) Kolbi
G. '17. According to the Sun, Kolbi, a sophomore guard “nailed three
straight free throws with no time left in regulation to tie the Interscholastic
Athletic Association of Maryland A Conference basketball championship and
spark No. 1 McDonogh's 59-52 win over No. 2 Roland Park.”
Baltimore Sun Boy Athlete of the Week (February 10) Karl
L. '17. In the final meet of the season, Karl, a wrestler, just needed to avoid
getting pinned in the MIAA match against John Carroll. He did and clinched the
No. 1 Eagles' fourth straight championship.
Co-ed Varsity Squash: Eleonore E. '16 won the #1 bracket by
defeating a player from Gilman; and Ben K. '18 defeated his opponent from
Friends to win the #2 bracket.
Swimming: Girls who won gold medals in the IAAM championship
meet
were: Alayna N. '18, Brindi G. '16, Isabella M. '16, and Avery H. '16 (200 IM
relay); Alayna N. '18, Emily W. '16, Avery H. '16, and Amanda C. '18 (200
freestyle relay); Amanda C. '18 (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle); Alayna N. '18 (100
freestyle); and Isabella M. '16 (100 breast stroke).
Boys who earned gold at the MIAA championship meet were Matt M. '16,
Derek N. '18,
Oliver S. '15, and Ben S. '18 (200 IM relay).
Wrestling: Congratulations to Quinn D. '17, Cameron H. '15, Sam
M. '16, Myles M. '15, Mike S. '15, and Wyatt C. '15 who took home first place
medals in their weight classes at the MIAA "A" Conference Championships.
Indoor Track and Field: Taking first place among the boys were
Mikey S. '15 (1600m); and Ellis M. '15 (shot put).
Girls who earned gold were: Jalysa L. '15, Elizabeth G. '15, Sophie A. '15,
and Sarah D. '16 (4 x 200 relay); Lakin H. '15, Sophie A. '15, Madeleine H. '15,
and Allison G. '15 (4 x 400 relay); Maddi H. '15, Jordan B. '15, Noemie N. '15,
and Allison G. '15 (4 x 800 relay); Lakin H. '15 (55 meter dash, long jump); and
Maggie S. '15 (1600m).
Gatorade Soccer Players of the Year: This year both the Girls and
Boys Gatorade Maryland Soccer Players of the Year are from McDonogh.
Congratulations to Bridgette A. '16 and Connor S. '15. Bridgette is the third
Gatorade Maryland Girls Soccer Player of the Year to be chosen from McDonogh
and Connor is the sixth to win the boys’s award. This is the first time
McDonogh students have represented Maryland in the same year. The finalists
for the National Player of the Year will be announced in May.
