Girls Basketball Wins IAAM Title in OT
The girls varsity basketball team rallied to defeat
Roland Park Country School (59-52) in overtime to claim the
championship title on February 15 at Stevenson University.
Ben F. '16 recapped the action in the following message to
Upper School students.
I don't think anyone has sent out a full email of the
once-in-a-lifetime pandemonium that transpired at Stevenson
today, so I'm going to detail what exactly happened,
because I believe the public should know how resilient our
girls were tonight.
This game was back and forth all night. Both teams had
five-point leads at some point, and Roland Park had a 10-
point 4th-quarter lead. Unlucky fouls and the Reds'
physicality were slowing the Eagles down, but they never
gave up, rallying back with some timely 3's. This is where
things got really crazy.
Roland Park took a one-point lead with 22 seconds
remaining. They then forced a jump ball to regain
possession with five seconds on the clock. After a foul,
the Reds expanded their lead to three. McDonogh's last
desparation pass was intercepted by a Roland Park player,
and the game appeared to be over as the Roland Park fans
rushed the court. But the refs said that the Roland Park
player caught the ball out of bounds, so McDonogh had one
more chance.
The Eagles went for the game-tying three, but Kolbi
G. was fouled going up, which set up three foul shots
alone at the basket for the season. Are you feeling the
pressure yet? So did Kolbi, but she didn't let that stop
her, as she drained the three foul shots to give the Eagles
an improbable extra four minutes!
Once overtime began, the Eagles dominated with strong
defense and clutch free-throw shooting, notching seven foul
shots out of eight in extra time. Then the clock hit 0.0
for real and the Eagles had successfully defended their
title.
