On Wednesday evening, May 21, students in Nonfiction Studies in Food Culture and Systems prepared and served dinner to their families as their final project, capping off a semester-long exploration of food systems, identity, and social impact.
Throughout the course, students explored how food reflects culture, impacts health, and reveals systems of power. They combined humanities and science to tackle real-world questions and engaged in hands-on experiences like cooking in the Culinary Kitchen with Chef Mallory, working on Roots Farm with Farmer Hood, visiting local organizations, and collaborating with Greatest Good McDonogh for the Empty Bowls initiative.
As guests enjoyed the meal, they also experienced the heart of the class’s mission: using food to build community and inspire change. The evening was a powerful reminder that education, like food, is most impactful when it’s shared.
