Prefirst Pen Pals Share Diwali Celebrations

Since the beginning of the school year, prefirst students have been corresponding with a first grade class at the GD Goenka Global School in Gurgaon, India. The little Eagles have had the opportunity to learn all about Diwali from their pen pals who have shared letters, videos, and pictures depicting the many ways they celebrate their beloved festival of lights.

On Wednesday, November 3, the prefirsters honored the holiday with their own celebration. They created and decorated diyas, a traditional oil lamp typically made from clay, that celebrants use to decorate their homes during Diwali. They also decorated the Lower School playground with a rangoli which is a beautiful artform that uses colored powders to create intricate patterns. The prefirsters enjoyed learning about the culture and traditions of their new friends and are looking forward to sharing their own customs in the near future.

This year marks the first time McDonogh School has closed in recognition of Diwali.
