In her 43 years at McDonogh, Nancy Fleury has portrayed nearly every Disney Princess from Snow White to Elsa. She has also worked her magic to transform Lower School education as we know it.
Mrs. Fleury's first job right out of college was as a Lower School substitute teacher. Within months, she was hired permanently and spent the next seven years as a second grade teacher. In 1990, Mrs. Fleury became the Lower School science teacher, where she applied her magic touch to teaching and became a model for educators throughout our community. After 11 years of teaching the wonders of science, she became a part-time reading specialist, offering support to our emerging readers. Her last stop, before graduating to the Lower School administrative leadership team, was as a first grade teacher.
As a division leader, Mrs. Fleury oversaw the addition of our prekindergarten program and guided faculty and students through the challenges of the pandemic. Then, in 2021, she became Head of Lower School, where she implemented a new reading and writing curriculum and oversaw the opening of the new Lower School playground. She is the heart of our Lower School celebrations — there is no Halloween, 100th Day of School, or Aquapalooza that hasn't been made more magical by her boundless enthusiasm, creativity, and costumes!
Nancy, as you close this remarkable chapter, we celebrate the culture of joy and learning you have cultivated. Your legacy is an inspiration. We wish you a magical retirement (and some well-deserved rest!) in the years ahead.
