No one has filled McDonogh's halls with music and laughter quite like Don New, who is not only retiring as Director of Upper School Instrumental Music but also celebrating 25 years of service to the School.
Mr. New came to McDonogh after an impressive career performing at the highest level as a member of the Airmen of Note, the United States Air Force's premier jazz ensemble. There, he earned recognition as a Distinguished Graduate of the Air Force Non-Commissioned Officer Academy and performed for several U.S. presidents at the White House. He also played at international jazz festivals and with the famous Glenn Miller Orchestra, a legendary American jazz band.
Mr. New's impact at McDonogh extends far beyond the podium. He created our music technology program, empowering students to compose, layer tracks, and produce their own music, and he can often be found in the Pit as part of the ensemble for the School musicals. His winter and spring concerts are much-anticipated traditions, showcasing music and composers from across the ages and around the world. Every concert is an interactive celebration where his audiences don't just experience wonderful music; they receive an education, too.
Beyond sharing the gift of music, Mr. New has been the faculty sponsor for the Automotive Club and, for decades, the manager of the Summer Work Crew. As a campus resident, he has been a steadfast supporter of our boarding program and the person everyone goes to for help — musical, technical, equipment-related, or almost anything else — and he always gladly comes through.
Don, thank you for enriching the lives of countless students and reminding us that learning should always include a little fun. Just because you are retired, we know the music won't stop. We hope you enjoy every note.
