Most of us experience McDonogh's campus as a place we walk through. For Colby Gill, it has been a place he has tended and shaped for more than 40 years. Raised on a farm not far from campus, he joined our grounds crew in 1982 and got to work maintaining the School's 800 acres and dozens of buildings.
You may have seen Mr. Gill on his tractor, mowing and lining the athletic fields with precision, or perhaps you have enjoyed a hayride through campus to Roots Farm for the pumpkin harvest. And in winter? Let's just say nobody loves a snow day quite like Mr. Gill. He enjoys pushing, plowing, and piling the snow as he operates one big vehicle or another. He takes pride in how clear and safe our roads and sidewalks are when school reopens.
Mr. Gill is a dedicated steward of the land. During his time at McDonogh, he has also assisted with the construction of the older faculty houses and, many years ago, navigated the trails along the Gwynns Falls to grease the water wheel at the mill race — a system that delivered water to a tower, which once held the School's water supply.
Colby, we thank you for years of keeping our 800 acres in top shape for all to enjoy. We hope you enjoy all that your well-deserved retirement brings.
