Ann Whitman - Retired Faculty & Staff - McDonogh School

Ann Whitman

10 Years of Service (2016–2026)

Ann Whitman spent most of her career living, teaching, and raising her family in distant places from Hong Kong to Kenya to South America, before she returned to her hometown, bringing that world into a Middle School classroom — one of her favorite places to be. For ten years, she has helped young language learners at McDonogh delve into the cultures of the Hispanic universe, guided by an experiential worldview and a sense of adventure that no textbook can replicate.

Her joy in sharing the Spanish language is infectious. As one colleague says, "Her enthusiasm and warmth decorate her room, and the children look forward to her class with eager anticipation, not just for the content, but also for the warm engagement of someone they know cares about them."

That warmth extends beyond the classroom. In the Middle School, Ms. Whitman is known for her positive attitude, growth mindset, and wry sense of humor. The way she leans in when listening, or asks probing questions, is not just her being an exceptional teacher; it's her being an exceptional human being.

Ann, thank you for bringing curiosity, warmth, and a sense of wonder to McDonogh. Our world is a little bigger because of you.
