Patrick Martel

Middle School Learning Specialist and Middle School Football Coach

Why did you choose the subject area that you teach?

I always loved math and science, but also had a great passion for literature, writing, and the humanities. Being a learning specialist lets me do a little of everything.

How do you connect with and engage students in the learning process?

I just try to be authentic, keep my priorities straight, and explain things as simply as I can.

Beyond the classroom, what are some of your interests or hobbies?

I love music, songwriting, and singing. I've been fortunate to be a part of Rock Shop and Songwriters' Academy, where I get to guide students through the songwriting and recording process.

How do you recharge and find inspiration when you're not in the classroom?

I love spending time with my family—my wife and our daughter. We like to visit local farms and watch Bebe name the animals and imitate their sounds.

Do you have a favorite place on campus? What makes it your favorite?

My favorite place is the recording studio, which I cobbled together from a bunch of Rock Shop equipment, in the basement of Keelty Hall. I love seeing kids get excited to go in there, whether it's to record their own song or just practice. It's a very cool space.
