The appointment of Brendan Minihan as McDonogh’s new Head of Middle School was announced on Wednesday, January 7, by Head of School Dave Farace ‘87. Minihan, who has been serving as the interim head of the division since July 2025, will step into the role immediately.
In a letter to Middle School families announcing the appointment, Farace said, “Brendan distinguished himself through his comprehensive leadership experience, authenticity, and genuine alignment with McDonogh’s educational philosophy and culture.” He continued, “Throughout the interview process, it was consistently noted that Brendan truly ‘gets’ middle school, understands the developmental needs of students at this age, and leads with clarity and kindness.”
Minihan's accomplished background, including eight years as Head of Middle School at The Tatnall School in Delaware and his impressive career as a humanities teacher, cross country coach, and administrator, positions him well to lead McDonogh’s Middle School. His academic credentials include a Master's Degree in Fine Arts from Sewanee and a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature from Rhodes College. Further, he is committed to professional growth and has participated in educational conferences and institutes, and presented at national forums on innovation and student agency.
Farace noted that during his time as Interim Head of Middle School, Minihan quickly built strong relationships with students, faculty, and families, and demonstrated a firm commitment to the School’s mission. “His collaborative approach and thoughtful leadership have strengthened our Middle School,” Farace said. “We look forward to the positive impact that he will have on our community for years to come.”
Following the announcement, Minihan commented, “From the time I started at McDonogh, I have felt welcomed and supported by this joyful and proud community. I am grateful and excited for the opportunity to serve as the Head of Middle School with a stellar, passionate faculty.”
