Seventh Grader Nitesh Cherukuri is 2024 Maryland Sweet 16 Chess Champion and Winner of UMBC Scholarship

Congratulations to McDonogh seventh grader Nitesh Cherukuri for becoming the 2024 Maryland Sweet 16 Chess Champion, thereby winning a four-year scholarship to UMBC!

Nitesh's high US Chess rating (2189) classifies him as a chess expert (2000-2199) on the verge of becoming a master (2200+). Further, Nitesh is the first MS16 Champion with a perfect score (4-0) in 10 years! He also recently achieved the title of “Candidate Master” at the North American Youth Chess Championship held in Mexico.

We are excited to follow Nitesh on his journey and applaud him for his amazing achievements!
