New Opportunities for Play and Learning Coming to Lower School

Head of School Dave Farace ‘87 and Head of Lower School Nancy Fleury announced the construction of a brand-new playground and outdoor learning space for Lower School students in a letter to parents on Wednesday, November 29. The Berman Family Playground, named for the family of lead donors, Sandra and Malcolm Berman, is expected to open in time for the start of the 2024-2025 school year.

In making the announcement, Farace and Fleury said, “We believe that play is an essential part of the learning process. Through exploration, discovery, and interaction with their peers, children exercise their bodies as well as their creativity and imagination. Play also helps children develop important social, emotional, and cognitive skills as they learn to take turns, cooperate with others, and problem-solve.”

The new state-of-the-art playground, designed to meet the developmental needs of students, provides opportunities to explore, experiment, and engage in imaginative play. The design features a variety of different areas such as The Village with playhouses, The Beach with opportunities for water play, The Dunes with a slide and climbing structures, and The Woodland Path with wood steppers and a living willow tunnel. There will also be an enhanced sports field, The Amphitheater for outdoor learning, and The Pollinator Path for environmentally enriching activities.

“The possibilities for creativity and fun are endless,” they both noted. “This enhancement to our Lower School is the culmination of months of planning, and we are incredibly excited to provide our students with new outdoor spaces where they can learn, play, and grow. We can't wait to see our lower schoolers enjoying the new playground next fall!” Construction on the Berman Family playground will begin in early summer. This initiative is made possible thanks to several generous donors who have come together to fully fund the project as part of the Legacy Campaign.
