Scholarship Speakers Express Gratitude

The annual Scholarship Luncheon in Paterakis Hall on April 12 featured alumnus speaker Darrius Heyward-Bey ’05 and student speaker Kalin E. ’18. Both speakers expressed their gratitude for the opportunity to attend McDonogh and encouraged the students in attendance to thank those who have made their education possible.

Headmaster Charlie Britton welcomed the more than 350 guests saying, “This is one of my favorite events of the year because it brings together students, donors and mentors, Living Legacy Society members, trustees, faculty and staff, and special guests to celebrate scholarship--which is truly the foundation of McDonogh.” He also spoke about the legacy of scholarship and the impact it has had on generations of students.

Alumnus speaker Darrius Heyward-Bey, a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers, spoke about the importance of letting people get to know your character. He noted that he always makes a point of thanking the people who gave him the opportunity to attend McDonogh as well as those who guided him along the way. He encouraged the scholarship recipients in the audience to remember McDonogh and to give back so that others will have the opportunity they did.

Student speaker Kalin E. also expressed her gratitude for the support she has received at McDonogh since arriving in sixth grade. She spoke about taking advantage of countless opportunities that she never dreamed she would have and how it has been life-changing. In closing, she encouraged the students to turn to their benefactors and thank them for making a difference.
