Impressive Finish at Battle of the Books

McDonogh's 2018 Battle of the Books teams had an outstanding day of competition on Tuesday, May 1, at Glenelg Country School. Now in its 18th year, all McDonogh Middle School students are encouraged to participate in the competition by reading at least three of the 10 books selected by area school librarians for the fifth/sixth and seventh/eighth grade reading levels.

After reading the books, battlers compete in teams to answer questions about the story, characters, and author. Whether students make it to the final competition or not, the Battle of the Books increases motivation to read, boosts comprehension, and broadens their choice of reading material.

Congratulations to McDonogh’s four Middle School teams who earned top honors and to all those who participated.

  • Fifth grade rookies Zewdi T., Meera R., Isaac A., and Ella N. competed against seven other teams from area independent schools and came away with an impressive second place finish.
  • On the sixth grade level, which included 10 teams, McDonogh’s group consisting of Sophie S., Abby K., Julia G., and Nikoo N. came in first place. According to Middle School Librarian Sara Beach, “They blew the competition away, missing only two questions!”
  • Battling against six other teams, were seventh graders, Jada G., Gabby G., Drew M., Will K., and Samantha B. Congratulations, on a spectacular second place finish.
  • The eighth grade team comprised of Sarah K., Drew M., and Ella M. left their McDonogh Battle of the Books career on top, winning the grand first place honor.
