Seniors Win Scholastic Art Award

Seniors Lauren L. and Jason L., were recently honored by the “The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards” program for their achievements in painting and ceramics, respectively. According to the Scholastic website, “The awards have fostered creativity and talent since 1923 for millions of students.”

Upper School art teacher and Tuttle Gallery Director Oletha DeVane has been working closely with Lauren and is impressed by her artistic ability. “She has exceptional skill in painting and she is an incredibly hard worker,” says DeVane. "Those two things make it possible for her to come up with creative, important ideas and carry them through in her work. I love the way she thinks.”

Leslie Portney, a ceramicist and member of the Upper School art department, has enjoyed watching Jason’s talent develop. She says Jason learned to throw pottery on the potters wheel in summer camp and has been devoted to the art ever since.

“Jason has made a total commitment to throwing and has set a high bar for himself and his classmates,” says Portney. “He has done intensive research into the processes involved in making ceramics and he has thrown a massive amount. He has put in the 10,000 hours it takes to master something.”

After graduation from McDonogh in June, both Jason and Lauren plan to study their art on some level in college.
