Seventh Grader Wins Geography Bee

There was excitement in the air as eighth grade Humanities Teacher and Master of Ceremonies Craig Copeland welcomed students, teachers, and guests to the annual Middle School Geography Bee in Horn Theatre on January 8. This year’s competition included 28 contestants who secured their spot on the stage by first becoming the champion in their social studies class.

The finalists were quizzed on their knowledge of U.S., world, scientific, and current events geography, and the questions became more difficult with each round. After an hour and a half, representatives from each grade remained on stage: Will K. '23, Ryan P. '22, Owen P. '22, Sarah T. '21, and Mohammed N. '20.

In the end, seventh grader Sarah T. was declared the champion after correctly responding “Utah” to the question: The Great Salt Lake is located in which state that borders Idaho?

Sarah will take a written test to determine if she qualifies to compete at the state level in the spring. A victory there would send her to the National Geography Bee finals held in Washington, D.C. in May.

Each year, more than 6,000,000 middle schoolers nationwide participate in the annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society.
