Entrancin' Dancin' at McDonogh

Fifty-eight dancers from the Upper School swept onto the stage of the Ceres M. Horn Theatre on February 20 and 21 to perform 16 unique dances for two appreciative audiences. Among the dancers were students who had been studying under Ilona Kessell, Head of the Dance Program, since they were in fifth grade.

The dances were created by 14 choreographers with close ties to the school. They include alumni, faculty members, and students in every grade of the Upper School. The dances reflected the wide range of talent among the artists and featured contemporary ballet, jazz, tap, modern, post-modern, hip-hop, and musical theatre dance.

Kessell praised her dancers for their energy, focus, and determination. “They make it happen,” she said. Rehearsals begin in October and end with the concert in February. “Some of the dancers rehearse four to six hours a week if they are in multiple dances and they have to work around their academic and athletic schedules,” noted Kessell. She also expressed her appreciation for the audience saying, “Your applause is the final note we strive to hear to complete the cycle of our efforts.”

Following the concert, dance alumni from the classes of 1999-2010 joined their former instructor to celebrate 25 years of dance and tour the new dance space in the Edward St. John Student Center.
