Eagles Earn 2nd Place in Maryland Chinese Competition

A team of McDonogh sophomores, studying Chinese, travelled to College Park on Saturday, April 9 and impressed the judges in the Ninth Annual Chinese Bridge Language Competition. The competition, hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Maryland, highlights and celebrates language competence and provides an exciting forum for competition in Chinese. The group of five McDonogh students competed against 13 teams of high school students from Washington, D.C., Virginia, and Maryland in two categories: a speech and cultural presentation.

Led by Upper School Mandarin Chinese teacher Jenny Zhaohong Li, Zach W. impressed the audience with his language proficiency in delivering a four minute oratory entitled, “I Want to Go to China.” Team McDonogh continued to impress with a beautiful performance of Beijing Huan Ying Ni featuring a duet by Cormac C. and Lindsay B. accompanied by Zach L. on guitar, Alexander Z. on keyboards, and Zach W. on drums.
