Cum Laude Scholars Inducted

McDonogh School's Cum Laude Society welcomed 29 new members from the Classes of 2016 and 2017 at an induction ceremony on Thursday, April 21. The national honor society, which recognizes academic achievement, is modeled after the Phi Beta Kappa collegiate honor society. One of 18 Maryland schools with a Cum Laude chapter, McDonogh has been a member since 1955.

This year’s keynote speaker, H. Stacey Boyer ’76, who holds the distinction of being McDonogh’s first female student (she entered as a senior) and first female graduate (her last name begins with the letter B) spoke to the inductees and the Upper School about “Always Becoming.” After sharing the story of her journey to McDonogh, Boyer reminded the students to always work toward the next level. She said, “Just because you graduate from McDonogh doesn’t mean you’ve arrived, it means you’re becoming a college student. Just because you graduate from college doesn’t mean you’ve arrived, it means you’re becoming a person who enters the workforce or pursues other dreams.”

Boyer encouraged the students to always challenge themselves by doing something everyday that scares them; learn to be comfortable with failure; to do foolish things with enthusiasm; and to remember that later in life, you won’t regret the things that you did as much as you’ll regret the things that you didn’t do.

She concluded by congratulating the newest members of the Cum Laude Society, of which she is a member, and saying, “Distinguish yourselves in ways that are meaningful to you. Achieve in traditional ways, or dare to be different. Or both. Enjoy these moments, these awards, these victories, but never stop challenging yourself. You’re never arriving, you’re always becoming.”

The 15 seniors inducted were Jordan B., Eleonore E., Kayla H., Chad K., Alexander L., James M., Jackson M., Austin N., Alana P., Aksel P., Jenna S., Lucas S., Tessa S., and Emily W. The 15 juniors inducted were Michael A., Emma D., Yakov F., Makayla L., Ian M., Nolan M., Nishad N., Gregory N., Chad N., Walker P., Joseph R., Ethan R., Peyton S., Eli S., and Allison W. Congratulations!
