Runners Hit Stride At Penn Relays

Qualifying and participating in the annual Penn Relays at the University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field is a huge accomplishment. This year, McDonogh sent two teams of students to Philadelphia for the meet which began on Thursday, April 23. McDonogh Coach Jeff Sanborn filed this report:

On Thursday, the girls 4 X 800 team of Maggie S. '15, Jordan B. '16, Noemie N. '15, and Allison G. '15 ran in one of four heats attempting to make the top 12 and the Championship of America held on Friday. They ran a very good race and placed eighth of the 64 teams that had qualified. McDonogh was the only Maryland school to qualify for the final. On Friday, in challenging conditions for all runners, the girls ran within seconds of Thursday's time and finished in about the same place, ninth of the 12 teams, although very close to fourth.

On Friday evening the boys ran the Distance Medley Relay, which they had qualified for at the Indoor Nationals. They were one of only 12 teams to make the Championship of America race.

“The crowd was in a complete frenzy as the top five teams were separated by 1.5 seconds,” Sanborn said.
