McDonogh Robots Rock

The McDonogh Robotics Team traveled to West Virginia University (WVA) in Morgantown to participate in the first-ever WVRoX off-season competition held the weekend of August 1-2. The marathon (26.5-hour) continuous competition began at noon on Friday and concluded on Saturday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. Seeding matches among the 24 participating teams were scheduled every 40 minutes, throughout Friday night and concluded with an elimination tournament beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday.

The seeding matches were grueling and so was the lack of sleep. Several team members and leaders stayed awake for more than 32 hours in order to help the team meet all of its scheduled matches. At the end of qualification (seeding) matches, McDonogh Robotics was selected to participate in the 2nd-seeded alliance (a group of three teams who compete together).

The MechDonogh Eagles team and its alliance partners (from Ontario Canada and Middletown, Delaware) won the WVROX competition! Not only did the winning team earn bragging rights, they earned a full-tuition scholarship for an engineering student to study at VWU.

Participating team members were Captain Rachel C. ’15, Colin G. ’14, and rising juniors Sam A., David S., Megan N., Tessa S., Trey A., Abhi M., Tanner S., and James M.

Coach Kim Smith said, “Needless to say, we are proud of the Robotics Team accomplishments.” He encourages the McDonogh community to attend the 8th "Battle O' Baltimore" a somewhat larger (but definitely shorter) off-season event being hosted at McDonogh on September 20, 2014.
