How Coeducation Enriched McDonogh

When the first 138 girls arrived on campus in September 1975, their voices marked a reawakening of McDonogh's spirit. Fifty years later, that story is still worth telling—and still capable of filling a room.

On Tuesday, March 31, more than 20 alumni and current and retired faculty and staff gathered for an evening with Jon Aaron '72, Archives Liaison to the Faculty, who led guests through, An Unfamiliar Octave, an interactive discussion tracing this pivotal chapter in McDonogh's history. Drawing on primary source photographs, documents, and artifacts from the Wilson | Young Archives and Special Collections, Aaron explored how those pioneering students found their voices, and in doing so, helped McDonogh discover its own: one defined by a spirit of welcoming new people and ideas that continues to shape the School today.

The gathering, which included a wine and cheese reception, was among the events marking McDonogh's 50th Anniversary of Coeducation.
