Susan Waskey - Retired Faculty & Staff - McDonogh School

Susan Waskey

From her office in the center of Allan Building, Susan Waskey has been in charge of all the Upper School comings and goings since 2007. While her daughter, Mrs. Livermore, may be the head of the division, Mrs. Waskey runs the show—and she does so with love and compassion. She lives and breathes what it means to be part of the McDonogh Family.

In addition to serving as the Upper School administrative assistant, she has been a beloved dorm parent to hundreds of boys for the past six years. Both her roles provide the perfect opportunity for her to look out for the upper schoolers. She’s like the neighbor everyone loves—always ready to lend an ear, a hand, or enjoy a laugh.

In 2016, when Mrs. Waskey was honored with McDonogh’s Distinguished Service Award, her colleague Dave Harley spoke about her early life and career and told the story of her first contact with McDonogh when she was 12 years old and babysat for a faculty family living on the third floor of Allan. He recalled that when she became the Upper School secretary, she transformed the office with student art, treats, and her good nature. And he spoke of the more frustrating parts of her job that she does with a smile.

Finally, he shared what he believed is Mrs. Waskey’s philosophy for living and her role at McDonogh. He said:

  1. Put others before yourself. Others are kind. Be kind to them.
  2. This is the last chance for students to have a childhood. Help each child know, “They are good. They are valued. And they are special.”
  3. Where else can you get paid to laugh?

Susan, thank you for your patience, your kindness, and your warm smile. While you will officially be retired, you will always be an important part of the McDonogh Family.
