Oslo Johnson - Retired Faculty & Staff - McDonogh School

Oslo Johnson

Thirty-five years ago, despite not knowing what the future would bring, McDonogh administrators had the foresight to hire Oslo Johnson to teach the essential skill of keyboarding and to develop a computer science curriculum for this emerging technology. At the time, the Middle School had a few clunky, second-hand Apple computers with 9-inch, black and white screens. It was a decade before Google was invented, information was stored on a floppy disc, and the idea of wireless was a dream.

Initially, only seventh and eight graders took keyboarding and word processing but soon computers became integrated into other subjects. As technology evolved, so did Oslo. She moved from teaching basic keyboarding skills, to digital media, and most recently to digital literacy. During the pandemic, like the rest of the world, she mastered the many features of the Zoom platform and incorporated it into teaching her seventh graders how to create digital art.

But Oslo is not just about computers, over the years she has been involved with a number of community service efforts including coordinating student involvement in food and clothing drives, serving meals to the homeless, and providing volunteer support to the Ronald McDonald House. As noted in the past, her dedication as a teacher is evident in her quest for excellence and pride in helping her students learn to give more than they take.

For 35 years Oslo has been a reliable, conscientious, dedicated, and consistent employee.  A master teacher, she has handled every evolution and situation with patience, wisdom, and grace. It’s been an impressive run.

In her well-deserved retirement, she and her family are planning a Disney cruise; and, she is looking forward relaxing with good books and movies. Oslo, thank you for your dedication to McDonogh and the Middle School. We wish you all the best in the years to come.
