Two dedicated McDonogh educators received the surprise of their careers at the School's annual winter faculty and staff meeting on Tuesday, February 17, when Head of School Dave Farace '87 announced them as recipients of the School's most prestigious honor–a faculty teaching chair.

Hakeem Sule ‘05 Awarded the Howard C. “Dutch” Eyth Teaching Chair
The Howard C. "Dutch" Eyth Teaching Chair is named in honor of the longtime teacher and coach who often said his role was to give students a chance to grow and be a part of that growth. Upper School mathematics teacher and Head Football Coach Hakeem Sule was a fitting recipient of the award.
Sule entered McDonogh as a ninth grader in the fall of 2001 and immediately immersed himself in the life of the School, working hard academically and displaying genuine athletic talent. He was determined to take full advantage of all the opportunities McDonogh had to offer, and upon his 2005 graduation was presented the Thomas R. Harper Award for "personal integrity and a devotion to principles of honor."
He attended the University of Maryland, where he was a walk-on freshman on the football team, and graduated with a B.A. in American Studies in 2009. Returning to his beloved McDonogh in 2010, he served as a strength and conditioning coach and soon after, was named the first-ever Oliver-MacMullan intern, teaching Middle School math and coaching football. At the time, one administrator described him as "one of the best first-year teachers ever."
His teaching and coaching career continued as he moved up through the ranks to his current position. His math students describe him as a patient, engaging, and active listener. Colleagues call him "calm waters," noting his unique, full-picture understanding of how the School works. Farace summed it up saying, "He knows how academics and athletics come together to create the full McDonogh experience."
Katie McGrain Awarded the W. Wright Abbot IV Distinguished Teaching Chair
The W. Wright Abbot IV Distinguished Teaching Chair was endowed in 2020 by Drs. Susan Cummings and Kris Jenner, parents of three McDonogh alums and generous benefactors of the School. It recognizes excellence in teaching and is named in honor of Wright Abbot, one of McDonogh's true "mission keepers"—an inspiring teacher, a dedicated coach, and a respected mentor to many.
When Katie McGrain came to McDonogh in 2008 as a kindergarten associate teacher, she immediately made a positive impression on her colleagues, students, and their parents. Warm and engaging, she provided strong support for the lead teacher and used her creative energy to become a "fan favorite" with the children. A "yes woman" always willing to take on another project, she soon took on the added responsibility of becoming the kindergarten administrative coordinator.
By 2012, she realized a long-held dream of becoming a librarian, transforming the Lower School's Dawson Library into a bright and welcoming haven where young readers could easily fall in love with books. She imbued her lessons with her own brand of creative magic, which even the most reluctant readers couldn't resist.
Six years later, she accepted a position in the admissions office, working with children and families applying to the School's earliest grades. She was committed to providing each family with a highly personalized experience that, despite the outcome, was focused exclusively on doing what was best for them.
The lure of the library kept calling, however, and McGrain returned to the Lower School in 2023. She has continued to make the Dawson Library a center of creative teaching and learning, alive with imagination and joy.
Farace quoted Head of Lower School Nancy Fleury who described McGrain’s true talent, saying, “It lies not only in what she accomplishes, but in how she enriches the entire school community through her generosity of spirit, innovative thinking, and unwavering dedication to excellence in education.”
