The Legacy Campaign Announced

With tremendous excitement and great enthusiasm, McDonogh School Board of Trustees President Robert L. Young III ’86 and Head of School David J. Farace ‘87 announced the public phase of the $90 million Legacy Campaign—the largest capital campaign in the school’s 150-year history.

In sharing the news in a letter to the McDonogh community on Thursday, April 27, Young and Farace wrote, “The world is ever-changing, as are the needs of modern learners. The Legacy Campaign is an investment in our programs and teachers to ensure that McDonogh continues—long into the future—to deliver academic excellence and graduate students of strong character who are committed to doing the greatest good in their lives.”

The Legacy Campaign, which in addition to raising funds for the construction of a new Middle School, has prioritized the school’s annual giving program and endowment to support faculty and staff, financial aid, and programmatic growth as well as campus preservation and acknowledging and sharing our history.

The effort began quietly in 2017 with an ambitious goal of raising $90 million in gifts and commitments from alumni, parents, and friends. Under the leadership of Campaign Co-Chairs Rob Bavar ’90 and Sam Wright ’64, devoted donors have already committed more than $80 million in gifts and pledges. Wright says, "I know firsthand how transformative the McDonogh experience can be. Continuing this educational opportunity for existing and future students by growing the school’s endowment is central to The Legacy Campaign. I am proud to be a part of this effort.”

Undeterred by the global pandemic of the last few years, McDonogh’s Board of Trustees and Administration have remained focused on the school’s top fundraising priorities and several of which have already been achieved. Thanks to the outstanding generosity of the Greenebaum family, the new, state-of-the-art Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Middle School building opened in 2021. Former trustee and past parent Michael Greenebaum says, “The Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Middle School Building matches the high quality of McDonogh’s program and pushes the boundaries of innovation and student-centered learning. Our family is proud to have helped bring this facility to life, and we are certain it will impact McDonogh’s students for years to come.”

Additionally, in the spring of 2022, the school unveiled the Memorial to Those Enslaved and Freed, and in the fall of 2023, the new Archives and Special Collections will open on the second floor of Lyle Building. This academic archive, comparable only to those at the college level, will contain 150 years of McDonogh and U.S. history that will enhance teaching and learning on campus.

Moving forward, The Legacy Campaign will focus on growing the school’s endowment in support of scholarships (financial aid), campus preservation, faculty, and innovation—areas essential to the long-term strength of the school. “As we proactively face our future, the potential for McDonogh is great. This campaign carries traditions forward while providing the resources required to match our ambitions,” said Young and Farace in their announcement.

The Legacy Campaign will run through June 30, 2024—which marks the end of the school’s 150th-anniversary celebration.
