New McDonogh Works Classes Starting

On the heels of a very popular inaugural season, McDonogh Works spring classes will kick-off on January 18 with What the Heck is Marketing? taught by Josh Jones-Dilworth, '98. This one-evening (7:00 to 9:00 p.m.) interactive course will explore the what, why, and how of marketing.

"This class is the perfect example of McDonogh Works," says Kevin Costa, McDonogh’s Director of Innovation and Learning and founder of the McDonogh Works program. "It’s taught by an alumnus with a passion and expertise in marketing; and is expected to attract students who are considering marketing as a career, as well as parents and faculty interested in understanding 'branding' from someone who has brought frontier technologies like 3D printing, AI, robotics and genomics to market," he explains.

Jones-Dilworth will return on March 1 for Entrepreneur Stories: Siri and JDI during which he will talk about working with the three founding technologists who incubated Siri and will draw on stories from the earliest days of Apple’s trademark technology to illustrate key entrepreneurial lessons. His final McDonogh Works course, Big Questions about Artificial Intelligence, on April 25, will explore the role of artificial intelligence today and in the future.

Other single-evening courses include What is Justice? Law for the Greatest Good taught by Baltimore City State's Attorney Lauren Lipscomb '93 (February 1); and Can You Pitch? The Art of the Memo taught by Jacob Taylor '11, a graduate of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism (February 12).

Costa says that the response to McDonogh Works has been exciting both in terms of attendance as well as the variety of topics and instructors from the McDonogh community. "I think people like the different subject areas, instructors, and the varying length of the courses. Plus, it’s free!"

Jay Taylor '65 who devised educational and cultural programs while working for the U.S. Department of State will lead nine sessions on The Nine Nations of North America (January 24 to April 4); and performer Jamie Balter '11 will discuss finding work as an actor or singer in An Artists Works: Tools of the Trade, offered May 7 and 9.

In addition to alumni, McDonogh parents are also involved, including Dr. Brooke Bussard who will lead a three-session course Everybody has to Eat! Getting to the Root of Good Health beginning January 30; and Kim Privett, whose program, Impressions of Impressions-Developing the Ones You Want, will begin on April 4.

"Whatever the course, participants will leave with understanding, skills, credentials, and connections with professionals. The possibilities are limitless," says Costa.
