Equestrian Team Earns National And State Titles
It’s been a banner year for McDonogh School’s equestrian team as a record
number of riders from various age groups and divisions qualified for season
finals and brought home an impressive collection of national and state titles. The
yearlong riding season runs from December 1 to October 31.
“Riding competitively is not like the other varsity sports,” explains riding
coach Amy Moore. “The girls who ride are extremely devoted to the sport. They
ride five days a week and compete at least three weekends a month... pretty
much all year. Competitive riding takes commitment, devotion, and
determination."
As the 2014 season comes to a close, congratulations are in order for the
following accomplishments:
- Grace B. '18 won the Maryland Horse Show Association Equitation Medal.
Not only was she the first McDonogh rider to win this class she is the youngest
winner in the association’s history.
- Sarah B. '18 competed all year in order to qualify her horse Von Trapp for
the Pennsylvania National Horse Show $10,000 North American League
Children's Hunter Classic. With two consistent rounds she took home fifth place.
- Madeline M. '18 and Elizabeth P. '19 took their horses to Washington DC to
compete in the $10,000 Washington International Horse Show Children's Hunter
Classic. Their high scores in the first round enabled them to make the cut off for
the finals where they placed fifth and tenth overall.
- Grace B.’s pony Molly Bloom was one of the top 25 ponies in the nation to
qualify for the pony hunter division at the Washington International Horse Show
at the Verizon Center. Qualification is quite an accomplishment but taking home
fifth place in the handy hunter class made it even more special.
- Allison K. '15 and Summerlynd N. '22 also earned a trip to the Verizon
Center for the Washington International Horse Show. Both riders qualified their
mounts for a coveted spot in the local hunter class. Allison and her partner of
two years, Inside Scoop, took home top honors- Grand Local Champion.
What do the riders do in November? Moore says they have November off
from competition, but they are still practicing. That's commitment, devotion, and
determination.
