Contest Proves Poetry Isn't Scary

The more than 65 tudents who participated in the 2025 Middle School Spooky Poetry Contest learned poetry isn't something to fear—it's something to celebrate.

The contest, created by eighth grade humanities teacher Julia Chandler gives students an opportunity to explore Halloween and autumnal themes through verse. It culminated in a poetry slam at Roots Farm on Thursday, November 6.

With titles like "Whispers in the Fog," "Where Shadows Stir and Potions Brew," and "The Life of a Crow," the poems featured ghosts and the supernatural as well as nature and the changing seasons. Despite the spooky subject matter, the event itself felt anything but frightening—the supportive audience of peers created a welcoming atmosphere for young poets to share their work.

While participation is voluntary, Chandler notes that the contest offers real curricular benefits. Students practice writing skills, apply literary sound devices, and develop presentation abilities taught across all Middle School grades.

Her hope is that through the Spooky Poetry Contest students will embrace a love for literature and poetry. As for the poetry slam, Chandler says. "It's fun, and we get to throw a poetry party!" What a treat!
