Scientific Inquiry Class Takes A Bite Out of Shark Fears

Shark Week. It's the Discovery Channel's annual deep dive into all things shark. This year, just in time for spring break, McDonogh's Honors Scientific Inquiry class held it's own Shark Week--an exploration into all aspects of the fascinating species.

The Scientific Inquiry class, taught by Josh Jones, allows students to drive the learning process. Their discussion of subjects they find interesting ultimately determines the areas in which they will focus. Then, working with Jones, they create a structure for their learning and a final product that conveys their new-found knowledge. After delving into nutritional science earlier in the semester, the class decided to attack the topic of sharks--one of nature's most refined predators.

The students were tasked with highlighting different shark species and dispelling myths and fears associated with them. They also wanted to bring attention to the issue of population decline across all shark species as a result of overfishing and resource exploitation. The team worked together to research an array of sharks and then created informational fact sheets that they emailed to the Upper School community each day. Links to the fact sheets can be found below.

Great White

Tiger Shark
Megalodon

For their next area of scientific inquiry, the class has decided to remain in the ocean but to turn their focus on to cetaceans, better known as dolphins and whales. While they are still determining what their final product will be, they have discussed creating a children's book about the topic to share with the Lower School.
