Working and Playing Together for Others

A wonderful spirit of cooperation could be felt on campus on Wednesday, October 15 as the third and ninth grades came together to support each grade’s service project.

The third grade project is Blankets of Hope. Earlier in the school year, the third graders held a shoeshine stand to raise money to buy fleece for blankets they planned to make for cancer patients. The “blankets of hope” will be distributed through the Red Devils, a cancer support group.

The ninth grade project is volunteering with Baltimore Playworks, an organization that helps children in low-income schools realize the positive power of play. During a brief orientation, the freshman class, who will work with the non-profit for the next four years, learned that teaching kids how to play together and how to problem solve during recess, decreases disciplinary problems and increases academic participation and engagement in schools.

How did the projects merge? First the ninth graders and the third graders teamed up for a morning of cutting and tying the colorful fleece into cozy blankets. When the work was done, it was time for play. Some students sprawled out on classroom floors where they played board games and card games and others ran around the playground playing football, soccer, and jump rope. Later, the older students held an official recess with activity stations for the younger students. Through the blanket making and playtime, the freshmen gained confidence in working with and leading the younger students, skills they will use when they volunteer. And, the third graders made some new friends.
