Middle Grades Partnership Connects McDonogh and Mt. Royal Middle

Sixty Mt. Royal Middle School students in grades 7 to 9 spent five weeks this summer studying hard in Keelty Hall. They received instruction in math, English, Spanish, and technology as part of the Middle Grades Partnership Program (MGP).

Stephanie Dennis, McDonogh’s Upper School learning specialist, ran the program along with Gena Proctor of Mt. Royal. Together, they designed a curriculum that balanced academics with summer fun. Campus adventures included visits to the Roots farm, golf lessons in John McDonogh Stadium, and more.

For the Mt. Royal students, a big part of the fun were the program’s teaching interns: Steven Banks ’09, Amaiya Davis ’09, Rachel Gholston ‘07, Brandon Herbert ‘07, Eboney Hutt ’09, Anna Lingan ’06, Brianne Reveley ’09, Garrett Schabb ’05, and Leon Schwartz ’05. Paris Gray '05 was an assistant. Tears flowed when the MGP middle schoolers said goodbye to their mentors at the program’s close.

McDonogh is one of ten such programs in the Middle Grades Partnership (MGP), operated by the Baltimore Community Foundation. Each program is operated by two partners: a public middle school and an independent school or university. The MGP identifies students during their sixth grade year in city schools and provides them with comprehensive, year-round learning opportunities over three summers and their two remaining middle school years.

Each partnership is different, drawing on the strengths, needs and school cultures of the partners. Teachers and administrators from the two schools work together to design curriculum and run the programs. This year, 600 students will participate in MGP programs at nine independent school and university sites. The Middle Grades Partnership has made grants to member schools totaling $4.9 million since its inception in 2005. McDonogh has partnered with Mt. Royal for the past three years.
