I am truly inspired by the opportunity to work with children. There is something incredibly special about seeing the world through their eyes. Their curiosity, enthusiasm, and joy are a daily reminder of why I chose this path. They are not only learning academics but also discovering the world and their place in it. Being part of that journey and helping to shape their minds and hearts is a profound privilege that inspires me every single day.
One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is the deep, meaningful connections I build with my students throughout the year. Beginning in August, I prioritize getting to know each child by learning about their interests, personalities, and how they learn best. As the year unfolds, I have the privilege of watching them grow academically, emotionally, and socially. When June arrives, saying goodbye is always bittersweet. The bond we've formed makes their growth all the more meaningful, and it's incredibly fulfilling to know I've played a role in their journey.
I also find great joy in witnessing those "lightbulb" moments when a student suddenly grasps a concept or solves a challenging problem. When I explain something in a way that finally clicks, and a student lights up with excitement and says, "Oh! Now I get it!"—that moment makes all the preparation and effort worthwhile.
The chapel is, without question, my favorite place. It is a quiet, sacred place that tells McDonogh's story through its age, beauty, and enduring presence and connects generations of McDonogh students, faculty, and families. I often think of those who came before me, including my father, who attended McDonogh during its military era, and how they, too, sat in that very space.
As a student, I experienced many meaningful moments in the chapel, especially during Baccalaureate on the day of my Commencement in 2002. Years later, it became even more personal when my husband and I exchanged our wedding vows there. That day added a new layer of significance to a space already rich with meaning.
Attending church each Sunday is an essential part of how I recharge. My faith provides a deep sense of peace in the midst of life's busyness and fills me with gratitude, joy, and clarity, and reminds me why I do the work I do.
Spending time with my family also brings me joy and restores my energy. We make it a priority to connect both in everyday moments and through special experiences. Those moments of connection refuel my spirit and prepare me to return to my work with a renewed sense of purpose.
