I chose to teach science because it has always been a subject that excites and inspires me. My undergraduate degree is in nursing, which gave me a strong foundation in scientific thinking and a deep appreciation for how science connects to everyday life. When I decided to pursue my master's degree and transition into education, teaching science felt like a natural fit. It allows me to share my curiosity about how the world works and to help students develop the same sense of wonder, inquiry, and problem-solving skills that drew me to science in the first place.
I believe that meaningful learning starts with a genuine connection. At any age, it's essential to first get to know students as both individuals and learners. By understanding their interests, strengths, and challenges, I can build the trust and rapport needed to create a supportive classroom environment. Once that trust is established, students feel more comfortable taking risks, asking questions, and fully engaging in the learning process. My goal is to make learning personal, relevant, and empowering so that every student feels seen, capable, and motivated to grow.
I hope my students leave my class knowing that I truly cared about them—not just as learners, but as people. I want them to feel that they can always come back, whether to ask for advice, share their successes, or simply reconnect. Beyond relationships, I hope they develop a genuine love of learning through the hands-on experiences we share. Even if science isn't their favorite subject, my goal is for them to find meaningful connections between what we study and their everyday lives, helping them see the value and relevance of curiosity and discovery in the world around them.
Outside of the classroom, I recharge by spending time at the beach, where I can relax and reflect. I also love being with family and friends, as they keep me grounded and inspired. In quieter moments, I enjoy crafting and reading—both allow me to unwind creatively and often spark new ideas I can bring back into my teaching.
Roots Farm is one of my favorite places on campus. I love visiting with students to "work on the farm" and experience learning beyond the classroom. It's a special place that reflects McDonogh's history as a farming community and offers students an authentic way to give back through service. I also appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with Farmer Hood and Chef Staley, who do an incredible job managing Roots. Being able to support their work and help students see the value of sustainability, teamwork, and community connection makes Roots Farm a truly meaningful part of campus life.
