Search Strategy

Good searching skills are critical to successful research. There are a variety of resources available: library catalogs, databases, e-books, and other digital sources. The type of search you do and the quality of your search terms will affect your results, as will your search history and clicks. Be aware that every search engine is different; use the HELP function or ask your librarian.

  • Use Choosing Sources to help you decide which types of sources you need: books, magazines, journals, databases, websites
  • Create a list of search terms, and keep track of successful ones. Use them with other databases.

SEARCH TYPES and terms

Simple — Quotation marks around your term(s) direct the search engine to locate items that exactly match your term(s); this can improve your search results.

Advanced — Enter multiple search terms or phrases; apply filters and/or limiters, or search by specific category (journal name, date range, full-text only, etc)

Boolean — Use and/or/not to enhance your search terms (ex: immigration and "American Dream")
