McDonogh, Britton Earn Top Workplace Honors


Leadership and a family atmosphere are two of the many reasons The Baltimore Sun’s Top Workplaces survey ranked McDonogh as the #1 Top Workplace in the midsize category and Headmaster Charlie Britton as a Top Leader. The honors were announced at an event on Thursday, November 30 at the Baltimore Museum of Industry.

The distinctions were based on the results of a survey conducted by Workplace Dynamics, LLC in which McDonogh employees answered a series of questions ranging from the basics (pay and benefits) to connection (feeling appreciated and doing meaningful work) and alignment (company direction, values, and cooperation.) The survey also assessed confidence in the leadership.

An article, which will appear in the 2017 Top Workplaces supplement in the Sunday, December 3 edition of The Baltimore Sun, states, “Faculty members quickly become part of what is often referred to as the ‘McDonogh Family’ — not merely a nickname for the staff, but an apt description of the workplace culture.”

Bridget Collins ’90, Director of Character and Service, is quoted as saying, “This is a nurturing and loving environment, and we spread that to our students. We support each other in work and play, in good times and bad. We push each other to be better, to work harder, and to be the best teachers we can be.”

The survey results also revealed that McDonogh faculty appreciate autonomy in the classroom, support in pursuing advanced degrees, and professional development opportunities.

Britton was recognized for “setting a tone of respect and empowerment without ignoring the fun.” One employee comment shared in the Top Workplaces supplement says, “Charlie is authentic, child-focused, playful, receptive, trustworthy, involved, and aware.”

Another employee applauded Britton’s “excellent vision for the future of independent school education” and called him “a person of high integrity and strong values.”

Meanwhile, Britton believes the key to being a successful leader is authenticity. He says, “I have found that employees will work harder to support your leadership and the organization's mission when they witness your honesty and humility.”

McDonogh has participated in the survey conducted by Workplace Dynamics for the past six years and each year the school has placed in the top two of the midsize category.
