On Friday, May 8, Advanced Biology, Environmental Science, and Genetics students stepped off campus and into the field at Washington College.
At the bird banding station, students observed researchers monitoring the seasonal movements of migratory birds. They then had the opportunity to hold and release a bird after it was identified, assessed for age, weighed, and banded. After walking the grounds with staff members to check the nets, they spotted both a male and female Baltimore Oriole!
Then it was to the fields to learn about the habitat restoration work being conducted through the Natural Lands Project, specifically the use of prescribed burns to create conditions that favor native plant and animal species like the Northern Bobwhite Quail. Students participated in a vegetation survey to assess how the season of a prescribed burn affects spring vegetation growth, comparing a section of field that was burned in November with another that was burned in April. LifeReady learning in action!
