General Summary

McDonogh School is searching for a dynamic long term substitute social studies teacher to fill an anticipated needin the sixth grade for the fall of 2025. The ideal candidate will help students grow, think deeply, make connections, embrace diverse perspectives, engage in meaningful learning, and develop an understanding of culture and humanity. This teacher will be joining a community of committed, passionate, and innovative teachers and students. Essential Functions

  • Inspiring, engaging, and encouraging students in the study of history as they develop as readers, writers, critical thinkers, and effective researchers
  • Serving as an advisor; contributing to the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth of adolescents
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues both inside and outside the Humanities departments
  • Using professional growth opportunities to continually refine practice
  • Responding to the needs of the School, including but not limited to, service learning, coaching, assigned duties, and other areas as determined by the Middle School Head

Recommended Employment Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in History or Humanities or a teaching degree with an emphasis in Social Studies or History.

Additional Experience

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and create engaging interdisciplinary units, projects, and/or courses
  • Experience working in a student-centered learning environment, with practical experience with problem- and project-based learning, as well as integrated learning
  • Familiarity with grammar or a willingness to learn
  • Prior experience teaching middle school social studies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Working Conditions

Evening and weekend hours may be required from time to time. Lifting and carrying of equipment is not typical, but may be required on rare occasions. Lifting up to 25 pounds. Other working conditions include climbing stairs, walking around campus, sitting, standing, and significant computer use including extensive close use of a computer monitor. Stooping/kneeling/crouching/crawling.
