In the fifth grade students learn tone, intonation and musical notation, how to follow a conductor and keep a steady beat, and proper finger positioning. The focus of sixth grade is learning different beats, vibrato, left-hand extensions and instrument tuning. In seventh grade students use the same techniques from previous years while learning a more difficult repertoire. Students learn critical listening skills to improve their own playing. The eighth grade curriculum includes a more sensitive interpretation of vibrato and tone, faster tempos and practice in fifth position. The students learn about music history through the study of composers and period music.
