Sandy Detorie - Retiree Tributes - McDonogh School

Sandy Detorie

Sandy Detorie came to McDonogh School in the Fall of 2015 as the Admissions Office Assistant and Receptionist after years of working the front desk at Bryn Mawr School. Though it took a few days for her to get used to answering the phone with “McDonogh School Admissions” over “Bryn Mawr School, how can I help you,” she quickly settled in and became part of the McDonogh Family. During her time, Sandy helped to welcome hundreds of new students and families into our school community.  She has been a valued member of the admissions team with her dry sense of humor and warm heart.

In her role as receptionist, Sandy was often the first friendly face that greeted Admissions Office guests in Lyle Building. While Sandy was welcoming to all families, she especially liked greeting prospective Middle School students and helping them overcome their nerves. With her strong connection to our Middle School Orange Key guides, she enjoyed matching the guests with their hosts at the start of each visit day. Often, after their admissions duties were finished, many of those Orange Key hosts made a habit of sticking around to tell Sandy all about what was going on in their fifth-grade lives!

Sandy also provided key administrative support to the Admissions team. She assisted in entering all the applications for Lower School and played a pivotal role in the collection of financial aid applications each year.

In retirement, Sandy will be busy tending to her garden, spoiling her dog, and supporting her beloved Baltimore Ravens. Sandy, we wish you all the best in the years ahead and thank you for five years of dedicated service to the Admissions Office and to McDonogh.
