Michael Eller - Retired Faculty & Staff - McDonogh School

Michael Eller

In 1986, Cyndi Lauper, Peter Gabriel, and Metallica were among the most popular musicians, and so was Mike Eller. In fact, for several years, McDonogh tried to “sign” him on to teach student guitar lessons, but he declined the offer more than once. At the time, he was giving lessons at a nearby music school and wasn’t sure he was ready to give up a good gig for a few lessons here and there.

But McDonogh wouldn’t take “no” for an answer. So, after a number of tries, our resident guitarist finally agreed to come on board. And thank goodness he did! Over the last 34 years, he has cultivated a love of music in countless students through his dedication and passion for music education.

Since arriving on campus in 1987, Mr. Eller has not only shared his love of guitar, but  has also overseen the growth of the Private Music program as it moved from place to place around campus.

In the late 90s when the Private Music Director retired, Mr. Eller earned top billing. Over the next 25 years, he hired numerous professional private music educators, scheduled thousands of student lessons, and instilled a love of music in many budding guitarists. In addition to being an excellent manager and educator, Mr. Eller also continued to feed his personal passion for playing guitar on a professional level with several local bands.

In years to come, special occasions such as the annual boarder holiday dinner and the winter Faculty/Staff meeting will not be the same without the beautiful background music of his electric guitar!

Mike, we will be forever grateful for the talent and dedication you brought to the Arts team. We wish you all the best in retirement.
