2024 Commencement and Upper School Awards

Congratulations to the following students who received awards during Commencement on June 7 and the Upper School Awards Ceremony on May 2.

AWARDS PRESENTED AT COMMENCEMENT

Ninth Grade Highest Scholarship Award: Amy Luo '27
The Highest Scholarship Awards are presented to the students in grades nine, ten, and eleven who have the highest level of scholastic achievement for the year.

The George C. Thomas, 1888 Award Tenth Grade Highest Scholarship: Philemon Kuo '26
The Highest Scholarship Awards are presented to the students in grades nine, ten, and eleven who have the highest level of scholastic achievement for the year.

Highest Scholarship Award Eleventh Grade: Ruth Elias '25
The Highest Scholarship Awards are presented to the students in grades nine, ten, and eleven who have the highest level of scholastic achievement for the year.

The Mercer Cup and The Sharp Trophy: Philemon Kuo '26
The Mercer Cup and The Sharp Trophy are awarded to the returning Upper School student who has the highest level of scholastic achievement for the year.

The Pick Award: Kelvin Niu '24
The Pick Award is presented to the student in the senior class who has the highest level of scholastic achievement for the year.

The Robert L. Lamborn Award: Cate Arbaugh '24
The Robert L. Lamborn Award is presented to the member of the graduating class who attained the highest academic average during the four Upper School years.

The Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Memorial Trophy: Chase Green '24, Kate Levy '24, Ava McKennie '24 and Noah Onkst '24
Based on the votes of the coaches, The Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Memorial Trophy is awarded to the Upper School students who have excelled in athletics through the years.

The Stewart Senior Honors Performance Award: Ava Jankowski '24, Teddy Seward '24, Dana Thompson '24 and Elliet Walton '24
The Stewart Senior Honors Performance Award was established by the Stewart Family in appreciation of the school’s outstanding programs in music, dance, and theatre. The recipients of this award must excel in one of these areas and be notable contributors to the performing arts at McDonogh School.

The John C. Bentz Award: Gabby Batrouni '24 and Ryan McGonigle '24
The John C. Bentz Award is presented to the seniors who have worked on behalf of the school and community, giving service, comfort, and guidance to others.

The Good Citizenship Award: Jai Bajaj '24, Ashton Kendall '24, and Elle Long '24
The Good Citizenship Award is given to the seniors who exemplify the principles of good citizenship: honor, service, courage, leadership, and scholarship.

The Thomas R. Harper Award: Andrew Kasten '24, Alexa Klein '24, and Danielle Nelson '24
The Thomas R. Harper Award, sponsored by the McDonogh Parents Association, recognizes seniors whose substantial, but inconspicuous, contributions to the school community are characterized by a strong sense of personal integrity and a devotion to principles of honor.

The Henry Child Kirk, Jr. Memorial Trophy: TJ Marshall '24
Based upon the judgment of the faculty, The Henry Child Kirk, Jr. Memorial Trophy is awarded to the student(s) who show(s) the most marked all-round improvement.

The Edward A. Looper, Jr. Award: Zoie Jackson '24 and Paul McLucas '24
The Edward A. Looper, Jr. Award is presented to the seniors whose sense of humor, cheerful attitude, and enthusiasm for McDonogh have served to make each day a bit brighter for their classmates.

The A. Ludlam Michaux, Jr. Award: Amani Murray-Lompo '24, Jackson Smith '24, and Ria Sood '24
The A. Ludlam Michaux, Jr. Award is given to the seniors who, since entering McDonogh, have been of greatest service to the school. It is designed to recognize the otherwise unheralded work of individuals who have contributed to the day-to-day operation of the school.

The Cornucopia Award: Izzy Asher '24, Mason Miller '24, and Arshan Parakhoodi '24
Given by the family and friends of Ceres Horn ’86, The Cornucopia Award is presented to the seniors who most consistently, through generosity in work, deed, and spirit, extend special caring and concern to the rest of the school community.

The Courage and Resilience Award: Arianna Fowlkes '24 and Drew Stoler '24
The Courage and Resilience Award is given to the student(s) in the senior class who have demonstrated determination, enthusiasm, and courage in meeting the challenges of life, and who have set an example for classmates, faculty, and friends.

The Howard C. Eyth Scholar-Athlete Award: Rachel Keane '24, Ryan McGonigle '24, and Camryn Scuibba '24
The Howard C. Eyth Scholar-Athlete Award is presented to the seniors who are outstanding scholars and athletes.

The Brandon C. Wilson ’89 Award: Isaiah Garrett '24, Zarina Hamilton '24, and Ava Jankowski '24
The Brandon C. Wilson ’89 Award is given to the seniors who, while exhibiting leadership in school activities, have also shown understanding, concern, and sympathy for fellow students.

The Leadership Award for the Senior Class: Matthias Miller '24 and Mary Gorsky '24
The Leadership Award for the Senior Class recognizes the seniors who have demonstrated leadership qualities and have helped make each year a smooth and successful one.

The Dedication Award: Claire Cook '24 and Carly Green '24
The Dedication Award is presented to those seniors who, in the opinion of the faculty, have participated both broadly and deeply in the academic and extracurricular life of the school.

The Louis E. Lamborn Character and Influence Award: Chase Green '24 and Kare Coley '24
The Louis E. Lamborn Character and Influence Award is given by the President of the Board of Trustees to members of the senior class who, by character and influence, have been the greatest inspiration to fellow students throughout the year.

The Lyle Memorial Trophy and The W. Taylor Cook Award: Ava McKennie '24 and Javi Rodriguez '24
Presented to the best all-around students in the senior class, The Lyle Memorial Trophy recognizes students who have strong academic records, have been involved in extracurricular activities, and have demonstrated strength of character. The companion prize for the Lyle Trophy is the W. Taylor Cook Award, which becomes the permanent possession of the recipients.

McDonogh Chapter of the Cum Laude Society Inductees
Members of the Classes of 2024 and 2025 were welcomed into the McDonogh Chapter of the Cum Laude Society which recognizes academic achievement grounded in character, honesty, and integrity. They joined 16 seniors who, in 2023, were inducted into the prestigious honor society.

Presented to juniors whose contributions and efforts have been in a range of school undertakings and who show promise of excellence in those endeavors.

The Faculty Prize for the Eleventh Grade: Ruth Elias ‘25
This prize is presented to a junior who shows outstanding intellectual and personal promise.

The Blanche A. C. Wells Award: JJ Di Monte ‘26 and Meheret Goshu ‘26
This award is presented to two sophomores who have most nearly lived up to the ideals taught by Louis E. Lamborn during his 26 years as Headmaster.

The Underclass Leadership Award: Jelani Baker ‘27, Landon Tamaddon ‘26, Ari Benjamin ‘26, Michael Tardivo ‘25, and Zewdi Tesfayohannes ‘25
This award is presented to those students who, throughout the year, have exerted a major positive influence on the life of the school through conduct as a person and capacity as a leader.

The Gary ’58 and Peter Dimling ’63 Award: Ethan Davies ‘27
This award is presented to the freshman who has been the greatest inspiration to fellow students throughout the year.

The Class of ’40 Award: William Ashley ‘26 and Ethan Fruman ‘26
This award is presented to the sophomores who have been the greatest inspiration to fellow students throughout the year.

The Louis E. Lamborn Award: Thomas Rafailides '25
This award is presented to the junior who best exemplifies the ideals taught by Louis E. Lamborn, Headmaster 1926-1952 2024.

The Excellence in English Award: Megan Winakur ‘24
This award is presented to a senior who has excelled in the study of English.

The Eustace Straughn Glascock 1879 Award: Z Smith ‘24
This award is presented to a senior who has excelled in creative writing.

The English Achievement Award: Sophie Scherz ‘24
This award is presented to the senior who has combined outstanding achievement and extraordinary passion in the study of English over the past four years.

The Shirley Klein Journalism Award: Lauren Geddes ‘25
This award is presented to the underclass student who has demonstrated interest in and enthusiasm for school journalism and student publications to attend a journalism seminar.

The Charles C. Kinard Award: Carly Green ‘24, Zarina Hamilton ‘24, Kelvin Niu ‘24, Ria Sood ‘24, and Elliet Walton ‘24
This award is presented to the seniors who, through writing, leadership, energy, and concern for others, have contributed most consistently to high standards of school journalism.

The Photojournalism Award: Brianna Mentzer ‘26
This award is presented to a student who has demonstrated outstanding dedication to and talent for photojournalism in the service of school publications.

The Underclass Chinese Award: Michael Tardivo ‘25
This award is presented to the underclass student with the most achievement in and enthusiasm for the Chinese language both inside and outside the classroom.

The Senior Chinese Award: Sophia Wang ‘24
This award is presented to the senior with the most achievement in and enthusiasm for the Chinese language both inside and outside the classroom.

The French Award: Thomas Rafailides ‘25
This award is presented to the underclass student who has shown the most achievement and interest in French both inside and outside the classroom.

The Marion Sparks Prize: Vahishta Engineer ‘24
This prize is presented to the senior who has shown marked proficiency in French.

The Underclass Latin Award: Will Moore ‘25
This award is presented to the underclass student who has shown the most achievement and interest in Latin.

The Senior Latin Award: Ara Wickramasinghe '24
This award is presented to the senior who has shown the greatest achievement and interest in Latin.

The Spanish Award: Izzy Pacheco ‘25
This award is presented to the underclass student who has shown the most achievement and interest in Spanish both inside and outside the classroom.

The Ruth Keebler White Award: Zarina Hamilton ‘24
This award is presented to the senior who has shown outstanding promise in the study of the Spanish language.

Exchange Student Recognition: Akari Nomura
This recognition is presented to the exchange student who has completed the junior year classwork.

The World History Award: Philemon Kuo ‘26
This award is presented to the student who has shown outstanding appreciation of, curiosity about, and achievement in the study of world history.

The Paul Carre ’21 Award: Madison Pegram ‘25
This award is presented to the student who has excelled in the study of United States history.

The Robert C. Smoot III ’51 Award: Philemon Kuo ‘26 Presented to a freshman or sophomore who has shown outstanding ability and understanding in chemistry.

This award is presented to an upperclass student who has shown outstanding ability and understanding in chemistry.

The Robert C. White Award: Jón Salenger ‘24
This award is presented to the senior who exhibits outstanding appreciation of and achievement in physical science.

The Alfred Ogden Ramsay Award: Cate Arbaugh ‘24
This award is presented to the student who exhibits outstanding appreciation of and achievement in biology.

The Dr. Herbert E. Wilgis ’53 Award: Javier Rodriguez ‘24 and Camryn Sciubba ‘24
This award is presented to upperclass students of biology whose interest, application, and proficiency suggest that good use will be made of those talents in medicine or some related field of endeavor.

The Robert E. Seigman ’64 Excellence in Science Award: Ruth Elias ‘25 and Sebastian Pio Roda ‘25
This award is presented to a junior in recognition of outstanding academic achievement, good character, and superior intellectual promise in the field of science.

This award is presented to a senior who has shown promise in the field of science, been actively involved in science, and demonstrated a sensitivity to the spirit of the discipline.

This award is presented to the art students who have evidenced the most improvement in expressing their art talent.

This award is presented to the seniors whose enthusiasm, effort, and talent have contributed to the encouragement of the visual arts at McDonogh.

The Simon Minkove Debate Award: Mark Cherches ‘25 and Aryan Prabhakar ‘26

This award is presented to the students who have made significant contributions to the school in technology.
