Studying the Spread of a Virus

Kate Flint kept things current in her sixth grade science classes with a lab that demonstrated how herd immunity is created with a vaccine and how contact tracing a virus works. Each student chose a numbered cup containing water. Some cups were "infected" with a virus. Students then combined the water in their cup with a classmate's and wrote down who they had been in contact with. After several rounds of interactions students then discovered which cups had become infected. From there, they were able to track the spread of a “virus” through their class. Finally, students discovered that some cups had been inoculated with a vaccine and were able to determine how that would have slowed the spread of the virus.
