Model UN Delegation in NYC

McDonogh's 16-member Model UN delegation traveled to Columbia University in New York City from January 12 to 15 for the annual conference simulating the work of the United Nations. During the weekend, McDonogh delegates participated on a variety of committees including the meeting of the Chinese Politburo, the Oceans Summit, and the Flight of the French Monarchs.

According to Ethan C. '19, "During committee sessions, we participated in fast-paced, unpredictable sessions debating global and domestic issues." He describes, "My committee, where I was the Vice Premier of China in 2017, specifically focused on the Chinese economy and environmental crisis, as well as an overhaul of Chinese foreign policy."

A highlight of the weekend for the McDonogh group, under the leadership of senior co-presidents Jeffers I. and Sophia L. was a visit inside the actual United Nations headquarters to see the International Atomic Energy Agency. They took part in a seminar relating to the future of atomic energy and weapons and how the United Nations plans to keep the world safe with regard to nuclear advancements and weapons. The McDonogh team also managed to see some of the sights of the city during their visit to New York.

Among the top performers during the weekend were Jeffers I. who earned the Outstanding Delegate Award and Hannah S. '19 who won the Best Delegate Award, which is the highest accolade at Model UN. Congratulations to the entire team, including seniors Samira C., Jeffers I., Sophia L., Walker P., Alexis S., and Saleh S; juniors Riley C., Allyson H., Kevin K., Claire M., Allison R., and Jeremy W.; and sophomores Ethan C., Alastair C., Jonathan H., and Hannah S. McDonogh's Model UN team advisors are Joanne Cho and Dawn Stellmann.
